lit. "two willows" 二柳

1723 ?1722 -1803, March 28 
享保8年 - 享和3年(1803年)3月28日

He was born 享保8年 in the mountains of Kaga, Nakayama.

His name was Mitsushige 充茂.
He studied haiku with Izumiya Tooyoo 泉屋桃妖 - 長谷部桃妖
久米之助(桃妖)

From Toyo he received the haiku name 桃左, and later 桃居.

In the spring of 1765 he begun a trip around the Northern Parts of Japan and visited Kanazawa. Later he walked from Owari to Bizen, Bingo, Awaji and Shikoku.

In 1771 he took residence in Osaka.
He tried to revive the pure Basho style, after he had walked around Japan as an itinerant monk (angya 行脚).

In 1783 he build a memorial stone for Matsuo Basho in 二柳庵桃居社中
Fujian Jiryuu 不二庵二柳 his home in Osaka.

In 1783 he visited Buson for one night.

In 1798 he received the title of Chuukoo Sooshoo 中興宗匠 Chuko Sosho
from the aristocratic Nijo Family 二条家.

In 1800 he build a memorial stone for Basho at Ukamuse 浮瀬 in Osaka
with Chinu no Kien 茅渟奇淵

白菊やまがきをめぐる水の音

谷水に鶯の影うつりけり
tanimizu ni uguisu no kage utsurikeri

in the water of the valley
the shadow of a nightingale
is reflected . . .

In the Edo period 'shape' was the first meaning for kage, and generally if kage was written with the character 影 (which Jiryuu uses) it means shape, and if written with 陰 it means shadow.

二柳の墓は、自らが建てた芭蕉の墓(向かって左側)と並んで建てられている。
「芭蕉3世劣孫」

He considered himself as the third generation Basho in the spirit.
